Our services

The Somerset Association of Local Councils (SALC) represents, supports, trains and provides advisory services to more than 250 member city, town and parish councils and parish meetings across Somerset.  We are the first point of contact when guidance is needed by member councils on all aspects of local government.

In order to ensure our advice remains impartial and cannot be misinterpreted we tend only to speak on contentious issues with the clerk and/or chairman. Our position as a membership body for the council means we do not represent the clerk or councillors individually.

Our advice covers a raft of topics including financial, legal and procedural issues. We also provide our members with model documents and specialist training.

The SALC office is staffed by Justin Robinson BA (Hons) MA, County Executive Officer, who can be contacted via info@somerset-alc.org.uk

Members can view and download documents available through this website. Non members can only see limited information and cannot download items.

SALC runs numerous training courses for both member and non-member councils on a wide range of issues, including popular courses such as:

  • Introductory training for new councillors
  • Specialist training for the council chairman
  • Courses for clerks

Information on our currently scheduled training courses can be seen on our Training page and Home page calendar.

Membership of SALC is by payment of an annual subscription fee based on electorate numbers within a town or parish. Membership provides access to the services of the National Association of Local Councils (NALC), the only body dedicated to representing the interests of member councils at the national level: in the Government, main political opposition parties, parliament, in the local and national press, and in liaison with other bodies such as the Standards Board, Local Government Association, Audit Commission and the Commission for Rural Communities.

To enquire about membership of SALC or to contact the office about any other matter please either send an email to info@somerset-alc.org.uk or telephone 01458 270922. Should you plan to visit the Somerton office please call to arrange an appointment so Justin can ensure someone is able to meet with you.
